Bespreking JES! Towards a Joint Effort Society

Dit is zowel een ouderwets als een verfrissend en nieuw boek. Ouderwets omdat het veel tekst bevat met veel moeilijke woorden en veel citaten en veel oude schrijvers en bronnen. Verfrissend en nieuw omdat het een koers beschrijft naar een andere en betere wereld die getuigt van enorme betrokkenheid en gedrevenheid van beide auteurs. Ze geloven in hun zaak en belijden hun eigen passie.  Het boek pleit voor een andere en betere wereld en gaat voorbij aan het inmiddels wat afgetrapte begrip duurzaamheid. In plaats daarvan komen de twee belangrijkste nieuwe termen: ecolutie en Joint Effort Society (JES).

Probleem en oorzaak

Kort over de inhoud. Wat is het probleem? Dat we ‘niet goed bezig zijn’, dat ‘het de verkeerde kant op gaat’ ‘met ons allen’. Er is te veel economische ongelijkheid, te weinig rechtvaardigheid, te veel vervuiling. Oorzaak van dit probleem? Dat is de dominante positie van de ‘economie’, het aanbod-denken (supply-side economics), het vrije markt denken, het winner-takes-it-all principe en het bestaan van vooroordelen (het hebben van een tunnelvisie).

JES  !

De auteurs pleiten voor een nieuwe wereld. De gewenste nieuwe eindtoestand noemen ze JES oftewel de Joint Effort Society. De weg daar naar toe is Ecolutie. In die nieuwe wereld van JES gaat het over meer rechtvaardigheid, mensen weer zien als mensen en niet als producten of pin-automaten, groei interpreteren vanuit kwaliteit en well-being, meer plek voor de intuïtie, meer onderling respect, economie terug naar een bescheidenere plek. Het gaat over het hele systeem (dus niet alleen over de economie), over de lange termijn. Dat klinkt als ‘duurzaamheid’, maar ..

Ecolutie

De auteurs gaan verder dan duurzaamheid. Ecolutie bevat de ideeën van de auteurs over hoe we die gewenste (ideale) wereld kunnen bereiken. Ze maken daarbij onderscheid in – het gedrag, – de instituties, en – de beslissingen. Op deze manier voegen de auteurs nieuwe dimensies toe aan het platgetreden begrip duurzaamheid. Zelfvertrouwen als basis van ons individuele gedrag, rechtvaardigheid en diversiteit als uitgangspunt voor de (collectieve) instituties en nieuwe democratische overlegmodellen voor de beslissingen.

Reflectie

Ik zei het al: dit boek heeft iets paradoxaals. Er is inhoudelijk een nieuwe aanpak met verfrissende betrokkenheid. Qua vorm is het veel tekst en weinig plaatjes en ook nog eens pittige tekst waar je moeite voor moet doen. En of dat ouderwets of juist nieuw is weet ik niet, maar dit boek zou ik willen kenschetsen als een pamflet, een oproep, een pleidooi. Een beetje Marx maar dan zonder revolutie maar met ecolutie. In die zin is het boek ook meer prescriptief (vertellen hoe het zou moeten zijn) dan een nieuwsgierige houding over hoe we in de huidige situatie verzeild zijn geraakt en welke krachten ons daarin houden. Met andere woorden: ik krijg als lezer het idee dat de oplossing vanaf het begin al zo’n beetje vast stond.

Boekbespreking Wat de Hel!

‘In ‘Wat de Hel!’ wordt afwisselend verteld over drie vrouwen: een demente bejaarde, haar hardwerkende dochter en een asielzoeker uit Nigeria. Elk levensverhaal wordt op een eigen manier in beeld gebracht. Vanuit Lisette, de demente vrouw, wordt haar kijk op het leven op een zeer humoristische manier verteld. Wat zij denkt en meemaakt, vaak de meest vreemde dingen, is in haar belevingswereld de normaalste zaak van de wereld. Hierdoor ga je als lezer bijna denken dat het inderdaad normaal is.

‘De Nigeriaanse vrouw Samya heeft veel meegemaakt. Door haar verleden in handen van vrouwenhandelaren en werkend in de prostitutie is haar vertrouwen in mensen ver te zoeken. Als klap op de vuurpijl komt ze ook nog in de wereld van asielzoekers terecht. Zij merkt dat er vaak vooroordelen heersen. Zolang mensen niet weten dat ze asielzoeker is zijn ze aardig tegen haar, maar op het moment dat mensen horen wie ze werkelijk is, wordt Samya al gauw gewantrouwd en als dader van bepaalde voorvallen gezien.

‘Pia, de dochter van Lisette is een vrouw met een goede baan en zij is maatschappelijk geaccepteerd. Pia’s leven verandert als ze besluit haar weggelopen moeder te zoeken en ze Samya leert kennen. Ze gaat haar leven anders inrichten dan voorheen om er te zijn voor haar moeder en voor Samya, die haar hard nodig hebben. Hierdoor krijgt Pia problemen, het wordt niet gewaardeerd door de maatschappij dat ze afwijkt van de norm.

‘De drie vrouwen verzetten zich ieder op hun manier tegen de situatie waarin ze zitten. Samen vinden ze een manier om van hun eigen leven een soort model te maken om anderen te leren hoe ze betere zorg kunnen verlenen. Ieder van de vrouwen heeft hierin haar eigen aandeel en groeit hierdoor.

‘De auteur weet van tegenstellingen een geheel te maken. Op een knappe manier laat ze de lezer switchen tussen de warrige maar levendige gedachten van Lisette, de bezorgde gedachten van Pia die heen en weer geslingerd wordt tussen wat zij wil en wat anderen van haar verwachten en de kordate gedachten en beslissingen van Samya. Sommige momenten zijn wat kortaf beschreven waardoor mij niet alles even duidelijk wordt.

‘Wat de Hel!’ vind ik een krachtig boek dat ons laat nadenken over hoe wij zelf mensen beoordelen op hun maatschappelijke positie. Tevens laat het zien wat de kracht van mensen is, zeker als men de handen ineen slaat.

The Force of the Ecolution Matrix (on JES!)

The five assumptions on which the theory of ecolution is based call for a different household management than the type neo-liberal economists have been promoting. Economy is put back to the place where it belongs: embedded in and supportive of social, ecological and psychological needs. Ecolution as described in the chapter Featuring JES! is a three-layered concept: a natural development, a continuous transition and an expedition into the future. All three layers are dynamic and fit for change. The concept aims at developing towards a higher ecological, socio-cultural, economic and psychological level.

The question is how to bring this about? The truthful cliché is that change is perpetual. Although a rather quick reversal needs to be brought about by force or, by a main concept in the conceptual framework of JES!, deconstruction. Deconstruction leads to chaos, the system that leaves room for creation.

Change is the essence of life. Most changes just happen, apparently without human interference. Some changes can be manipulated. Some need force, like the birth of a child. At the other end of the lifecycle – where the Old and Settled are taking a last breath – the corridors are narrow too. Life is full of habits, familiarities and boring repetitions. Expectations of most ageing people get lower everyday, and so do the results. A self-fulfilling prophesy. To get out of this quicksand of self-destruction, a human being, a system, or a society needs some deconstruction, some disorder, some disorganization, maybe some dislocation too.

The purpose of change may be concrete or abstract. What counts is the change itself. Change stimulates resilience, flexibility and sensitivity to change. Those are lessons from biology and psychology, adopted by ecology and economy.

In JES! we call the catalyst for change: ecolution[1]. Ecolution is creative destruction of attitudes, technologies, institutions, decisionmaking, procedures, protocols and forces of habit that are taken for granted and have become a burden instead of a blessing for the individual, as well as for the communities he or she is part of.

@nonfixe and @ecolutie we have been busy writing: JES! Towards a Joint Effort Society, a General Theory on Development (& Ecolution Method) The follow-up of Only Winners (Erasmus University) looks for patterns in current society and gives clues on how to progress ecological, economical, socio-cultural and psychological towards a higher level of awareness & wellbeing. Direction: a future without deprivation & depletion. Common sense for those who understand that sharing & accumulative learning is in their own interest.

Two questions led to the writing of JES!: What causes the inability of the human race to create a World where everybody is free and healthy, with enough food and water for everyone? And: How can destructive behaviour, decisionmaking and technologies turn into constructive sustainable ways of living for the benefit of all, people, planet and profit, here and now, there and later?

The manuscript is currently under review of international scientists and peers.

Why do you have to read this book?

The world we live in is a strange place filled with visible and invisible systems that are all interconnected, entangled, interfering with and, influencing each other. This has always been so, but the actions and reactions seem to speed up since reality got a digital twin. Economic, ecologic, socio-cultural and psychological crises have been ravaging the globe, leaving many individual people, organisations and communities at the verge of breakdown. The call for change gets louder by the minute and many think that change has to come from more law and order, stricter security, zero-tolerance. Such measurements go at the cost of essential freedom(s), such as freedom of speech, freedom to differ and freedom of movement. At the same time governmental institutes lose their authority and the general reaction is another crackdown on personal liberty and privacy.

The point is that the problems we face will not be solved by harsh regulations, nor by unlimited individual freedom. These problems are complex and incorporate contradictions. They are divergent, as E.F. Schumacher writes in his Guide for the Perplexed[1]. To solve them mankind – starting one individual at the time – has to climb to a higher level, a plateau from where opposites can be reconciled in a larger vision. Democracy, for instance, is such a concept on a higher level that overarches opposites. Decisionmaking in a functioning democracy is done by the majority with due observance of the interest of the minority(s). The last part of this definition prevails people from getting screwed, inhabits freedoms to disagree and dissent and, takes a society towards a Nobody Rules plateau while preventing anarchy or inertness. Decisions can be made and implemented and the people living in the society can be free.

JES! offers concepts and ways that help to analyse what is going on around you. You learn to see the patterns and to translate reality into concepts of your own. The book shows a new way of looking at things and events. It learns you to master complexity and to dance with systems. You learn to understand and to create solutions. You can fit technological progress in this fresh approach of sustainable development that goes beyond the traditional track of thinking.

That is why we use a new word: Ecolution.

You learn to play with it, give it a meaning of your own, so you understand why politicians, economists, psychologists and other professionals say what they say, but don’t act upon those words. Put your own worldview next to the perception of others and create a vision on where all that is happening leads to. Learn to use the Ecolution matrix so you can define complexity into simple concepts and subsequently mix several concepts into something new. Break down old order and hierarchy and replace that with fresh ways of thinking and, acting! It is all inside this book.

Only Winners is difficult to summarize, because of the richness of the material. It contains an inspiring philosophy for change to a society with Only Winners, a Joint Effort Society. The book offers a working method, new conceptual framework and toolbox for practice as well.

With the help of grand masters, such as Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Donella Meadows, Jean Paul Sartre, Joseph Schumpeter, John Stuart Mill, John Keanes and many others, the writers developed a philosophy for sustainable development that is hard to oppose, since all win.

Ecology is the new bottom-line for wellbeing, peace and economical growth. Man has to partner with nature, and with other men. Man has to learn to dance with systems, as well. For one never knows the side-effect when interfering in a complexity. Agility, flexibility and being connected can work for a sustainable development. Especially when the grass-root is supported by the top and vice verse. The behaviour of one person, the freedom and responsibility of all, rooted in a true democracy – of which the Harvard Mutual Gains Approach is one exponent – and innovations in production, services and communication together do the trick.

The heart of the matter can be found in the Only Winners Matrix that is intended to inspire and guide into new thinking and doing. The Matrix is not a fixed model, but dynamic and therefore applicable to different situations and issues.

It consists of three development stages: destruction – deconstruction – construction. These tend to occur one after the other in daily life. They root in the S-curve of economist Richard N. Foster as well as in Jacques Derrida’s thinking.

Next to the phases there are solution-finding clusters: behaviour – technology (including procedures) – decision-making.

The development phases and the solution-finding clusters are set on two axes and form a matrix, the Only Winners Matrix. This matrix is loaded with concepts. These concepts are changeable, even for new concepts, as long as they obey seven criteria – of which four are based on the Natural Step Approach.

The thesis Only Winners by Frank van Empel and Martin Bakker derives from failure. Inability to influence the behavior of people, systems, ingrained habits, calcified structures, routine decision-making processes, outdated technologies and closed sub-cultures to disrupt and then reset to give room for innovation. Ten years of intensive involvement in regional sustainable development policies in Noord-Brabant have produced not much more than minutes, reports and resolutions. How can we improve this? That was the central question. The answer – about 500 pages – will follow on Thursday April 26, early in the morning at Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

Pricewinning Dutch painter Barend van Hoek translated the scientific work into eleven sharp lined drawings that are published in a witty book, presented at Arpil 26 2012.

Biografie van de cineast Mongi Farhani

Mongi Farhani is in de eerste plaats cineast en wereldburger. Hij verfilmt wat hem raakt.

Cineast, op zoek naar vrede en rechtvaardigheid. Sinds de Jasmijn Revolutie in zijn land van herkomst is Farhani teruggekeerd naar Tunesië. Zijn laatste film met Nederlandse ondertiteling is Al-Sharara, het Lont, over de revolutie. De trailer staat hier.

Farhani is tevens nauw betrokken geweest bij het ontstaan van ‘Asfour, over verraad‘, door Caro Sicking. De roman speelt zich af tegen de achtergrond van de eerste vrije verkiezingen na de val van het regiem Ben Ali.

Hij heeft in diverse projecten met Kasba en Studio nonfiXe samengewerkt. Onder andere de clip van de song Nabina, Peace for everyone.

Mongi Farhani is geboren in 1968 in El Kef een klein stadje in een land met een rijk verleden,het land van Carthagers, Grieken, Romeinen, Berbers en Arabieren, Tunesië.

Zich realiserend wat er in zijn omgeving afspeelde en bewust van de invloed die het verleden heeft op het nu, koos Farhani voor een literaire studie.

Gedreven door zijn drang om misstanden aan de kaak te stellen vertrok hij naar het Europese vaste land.

In Italië studeerde hij theaterwetenschappen om uiteindelijk in 1995 in Nederland zijn nieuwe thuis te vinden.

Mongi Farhani filmt, produceert documentaires, schrijft gedichten en maakt schilderijen.

De afgelopen 3 jaar werkte hij als freelance filmmaker voor o.a. de NMO, de NIO en Omroep Brabant. Eind 2008 richtte hij de nieuwe de jongerenomroep ‘Overzuidelijk’ in Boxtel op.

Verder is Mongi Farhani de bedenker van de cartoons MIM&EM die hij samen met cartoonist Maarten Melis tekent om mensen bewust te maken over zaken als integratie, wereldvrede, zinloos geweld enz..

Met zijn werk probeert hij een brug te slaan tussen het westen en de Arabische wereld met humor en de nadruk op wat mensen verbindt.

De korte film ‘Geraakt‘, die de journalist & critics award van het Arab Filmfestival 2010 in Rotterdam won, is een goed voorbeeld hiervan. ‘Geraakt’ ging op 8 juli 2009 in première in de Verkadefabriek in Den Bosch. TV première op zondag 11 juli 2010 om 14.30h, Nederland 2.
