Almost thirty years later a same kind of situation occurs. It’s debt all over again and once again all professionals are negative about the future. There’s a lot of fuss about Greece that can pay interest on its outstanding debt anymore. There have been two bailout packages of 150 billion dollar each to save Greece from bankruptcy. On global scale, however it is a fuss about nothing; the numbers are so big that they have lost their meaning. Check it yourself. Does this mean anything to you: the level of aggregate net government debt in the world rose from $21,900bn in 2007 to an expected $34,400bn in 2011. IMF forecasts indicate the level will reach $48,100bn in 2016. The ratio of world net debt to world GDP rose from 42 percent in 2007 to 57 percent in 2011, and is expected to hit 58 percent in 2016.

In other words, all the governments in the world have built up a net debt of $34.400.000.000.000 up to now, 57% more than in 2007. We don’t even talk about private debt yet. We all are debtors.  I can live with that. It’s easy to find solutions, but then someone or something has to give. Some options:

1. The EU introduces the Eurobond, to catch billions of euro’s on the capital market in order to finance all deficits in the Union. Speculation against the euro doesn’t make sense. It is simply too big.
2. The Central Bank buys all bonds of Greece and other heavy debtors such as Italy. By doing that more euro’s come in circulation. In a fast growing economy that can stir inflation.
3. The European Union has her own budget, but in addition to that may earn taxes as well. By investing in the production of sustainable energy and by lowering taxes the economy is stimulated. With the budget instrument and taxes one can fine tune policies.
4. To define away the whole problem. Ignoring the foreign component, or looking at the world as a whole, the overall level of debt makes no difference to aggregate net worth — one person’s liability is another person’s asset.

It is no good to dump one of the Euro-sisters. Now it’s Greece. Tomorrow it may be us, the Netherlands. On a global scale 300 billion dollars for a bailout is peanuts. Europe can handle it. The USA has run a deficit on the current account for decennia. The USA could do that because they were privileged. Oil is worldwide paid for in dollars. For that reason there is a lot of demand for dollars. The deficit on the capital account is compensated by a surplus on the capital account (the need for dollars just mentioned.

The dollar, however is being replaced, little by little, by the euro. Then a deficit more or less in Europe doesn’t matter anymore. Deficits will be compensated by surpluses.

But spending in a time of conceived crisis seems to be inappropriate. Nobody wants to pay for the Greeks – they enjoy pension from 55 year. Let alone for the Italian – Berlusconi’s parties are famous. But is that what we have to look at?

The EU is founded for one reason and one only: peace. Robert Schuman and Jean Monet thought of a way to achieve this, through economic liaisons. People who trade with each other are interdependent, they don’t fight.

Today some fifty years later we stand at the dawn of yet another crisis, right at the moment the EU budget needs to be agreed on. For the coming decade. The European Committee (EC) proposes – among other things – to raise taxes by itself. Many a country, such as the Netherlands, is deadly against such a tax, afraid to loose sovereignty. And populists use the financial crisis to play peoples’ feelings, counting Euro’s as if they are accountants, forgetting the larger picture and values for convenience’ sake.

Among the taxes the EC proposes there is the Financial Transaction Tax (FTT). It is a small fee on transactions done by banks and other money machines when they trade, for example, bonds.

The same banks that were saved from bankruptcy by the taxpayer, have to give something back to society while playing with money, the Robin Hood Tax Community exclaims.

According to Robin Hood calculators 0.05% Transition Tax can lead up to €200 billion revenues each year. Enough money to save Greece, or to support the poorest, to prevent the Dutch from cutting on budgets for handicapped, in other words, the financial sector’s pocket money can save the world.

Mr Sarkozy and Mrs Merkel are in favour of the EU to raise Financial Transition Taxes. The Netherlands is one of the countries against. At least, when it is a EU measure. Financial transactions need to be taxed worldwide before the Dutch join in, afraid of the economic consequences.

This type of argument symbolises the negotiations on the whole EU budget; fear of losing, afraid somebody else gets a little bit more. As if we are children fighting over a piece of candy. What such national politicians forget is that we have much more to lose than money. The EU is, as stated, about peace. One can’t have peace when some are hungry while others spend the crab out of themselves. Large disparity of income causes discontent and raises revolutions. Banks should be aware of this as well, for their own good.

Let us not forget one thing: the EU is a democratic institute. The European parliament is chosen by Europeans and the Council consists of chosen country leaders. There are checks and balances, civilians can influence decisions and regions get support for (sustainable) development. In many a way the EU is more democratic and transparent than most member states. Europe paves the way for energy transition and social cohesion.

Yes, there is a lot of bureaucracy and, it is not perfect. But instead of rejecting the EU we should embrace it and strive for improvement. The European Union is today’s only government that works on the common good, oblivious for populists and other short-term politicians.

Every seven years a human body is claimed to reinstall. Cells renew… So does the EU in financial terms. We’d better support it, because the EU supports our individual sovereignty and continental prosperity and peace whether the Greeks pension or not.

This Dutch party, ironically calling itself Party of Freedom (PVV), has no democratic structure in itself and is basically the one man show of Geert Wilders. He is surrounded by so-called blue collar – ordinary – pop up politicians to fill seats in Parliament, many of them convicted for fraud or violence. In the meantime Wilders, who himself is court marshalled for hate speech, tries to look and sound like a reasonable politician who sincerely worries about the influence of Islam in the European nations.

When he gave a speech in Rome on March 25, Wilders started with a handmade history lesson: the Roman Empire fell because of immigrants; Germanic Barbarians flooded the empire and rampaged the country. ‘The fall of Rome was a traumatic experience,’ Wilders claims. Well, merely living in these ages must have been a traumatic experience.

The Romans weren’t known for their peace-loving nature; they violently conquered quite some land (veni, vidi, vici) trying to expand their wealth. At some point Roman society became decadent and thus weak. Economic conditions deteriorated as well, due to the very expensive army the Romans had to sustain. Moreover currency devaluated when newly found mines ended the scarcity of silver. The Visigoths who entered the empire and presumably sacked it, weren’t famous for their humanity either. The world 1600 years ago was very different from the place we live in now. There was no democracy, nobody ever heard about human rights and the strongest prevailed. Wilders’ ordinary people were mainly slaves… and having a blue collar was an unknown luxury.

Luckily society has moved forward, not in the least because of the foundation of the European Union. The member states have been living in peace with each other since April 18, 1951, when the European Community for Coal and Steel – EU forerunner – came to being.

We have to thank Robert Schuman and Jean Monet for their long-term vision on how to bring and maintain peace on the continent. The basic thought behind the community was to make ‘war materially impossible’. When people trade and are mutual dependent for their livelihood, it is unlikely for them to grab arms and fight. The ECSC started with six nations and invited others to join. The treaty gradually grew into what we know now as the European Union. The community has been and still is an enormous success; it has brought peace and prosperity.

Therefore, instead of garbageing the EU like so many right wing politicians call for, we need to expand it, ask other countries to join, like Turkey and Morocco. People who are afraid of this should try to imagine how afraid of each other the French and the Germans were, after fighting two major wars in barely three decades. Fear is a bad advisor. Pouring Angst into a society is one of the most common strategies every starting dictator follows. Angst combined with a scapegoat whose fault it is when for example the economy collapses. This scapegoat can be the boogieman, Hitler picked on the Jewish community and nowadays babydictators and populists point at Islam.

These power hungry populists conveniently mix immigration and Islam into a shambolic ideology that surfs the waves of insecurity civilians tend to feel in a changing world. They abuse history, quote statesmen and philosophers or writers without mentioning the context of these words, they plant fear inside peoples’ hearts and demand for security measurements while declaiming the best security on earth: the European Union. The EU protects its’ people, not only from each other, but from dictatorship as well. We in Europe are free.

This is exactly why we have to keep Islam out, some extremists will add, the sound of warnings about an aggressive ideology ringing in their ears. Here is a parallel to the days when senator McCarthy pursued communists. Then the red danger was the great evil and threatening force, now the shekel is assigned as the symbol that is going to destroy our values, prosperity and culture.

Similar to the events in the Eastern bloc some twenty years ago, dictators and monarchs all over the Middle East are called to the stand by their own people these days. Muslims demonstrate for freedom and democracy. They are not so very different from the rest of the world. And neither is the religion.

Islam has the same roots as Christianity and Judaism. All three religions go back to Abraham. The Koran, some claim, is based on hallucinations, but isn’t the Bible as well? Stories featuring Adam and Eve, an apple and a snake …

Others state that Western society is superior to Islam communities. Today Westerners still use the Arabic ciphers (sifr) and teach Algebra in schools. Modern navigation tools and astronomy find their roots in the Middle East. Women rights? Well, the Koran teaches that men and women are equal, although this is not the case in many parts of the world. Women all over suffer from male domination. People all over the world suffer slavery and abuse, just think about the grand scale child abuse in the Catholic Church that recently came out. Abuse and discrimination happen in every society.

There is not such a thing as a superior civilisation, culture or religion. The good and the bad, the inferior and the sublime travel hand in hand wherever people live. If we want to conquer evil, we have to create a system that roots it out, with checks and balances to prevent the powerful from becoming sole rulers. We have to make wars ‘materially impossible’, like Schuman taught us and like Europe is doing for sixty years already.

People in Northern Africa demonstrate for freedom, dignity and democracy. Ecological crises, like the disaster that hit Japan, merciless point out that we all live on the same planet. The house of humans is crumbling and shaking. We have to take care of it together. When the cellar breaks down, the house collapses. If the attic is a mess with vermin crawling around, the whole mansion will become an unhygienic place. Each and every room, wall, window, hallway and door is equally important for the inhabitants. We also have to reckon with each other while living together. We can decorate the spaces differently, change colours with rooms, but together we have to maintain the building and its’ community.

Immigrants are not the problem, they never were. Most societies thrive on immigrants and diversity. Until humanity is doing good earthkeeping there will be immigrants. This will go on until basic needs are satisfied within the countries of origin as well as in the countries of destination. We can accomplish this by mutual economic dependence, which is already there, but not as such acknowledged yet. Once we start to act according to this shared fate, war will be materially impossible worldwide, borders will be marks of ancient times freely crossed over by who wants to – like in the EU now – This will save a lot of money and energy, as well as lives, because there is no need anymore to sustain an army.

Is this Utopia? No, this is Europe today and it can be the world tomorrow.

Jeremy Rifkin schrijft in zijn boek ‘De Europese Droom’ over de relatie tussen staat en eigendom. De staat, sinds het verdwijnen van de feodale maatschappij, is vooral bedoeld om de eigendomsrechten van particulieren te beschermen. Privé-eigendom is een natuurrecht geworden en derhalve onaantastbaar. Hiermee is de basis gelegd voor het individualisme en het huidige kapitalistische economische stelsel. (Hij refereert aan Locke en Luther onder andere)

Later legt Hegel de relatie tussen de uitdrukking die de mens aan zijn persoon geeft en diens eigendommen. Je bent wat je hebt. Eigendom is de expressie van persoonlijkheid geworden. En tevens de garantie voor individuele vrijheid: ‘Hoe meer eigendommen men bezat, hoe autonomer en mobieler men kon zijn. En hoe vrijer. Eigendom hield daarom een grens in tussen het zelf en de ander.’ Volgens Rifkin is het eigendomsdenken een Europese vinding die gesublimeerd is door/in de Verenigde Staten.

Inmiddels verzwakken de factoren die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de bestaande eigendomsverhoudingen. Nieuwe technologieën veranderen ons gevoel van tijd en ruimte fundamenteel. We maken langzaam de overgang van eigendom naar toegang. Hier raakt Rifkin aan de vraag: wat is de toekomst van de (nationale) staat? Hij ziet kansen voor transnationale politieke ruimten, zoals de EU, naast globale commerciële netwerken. Andere politiek en andere politici, niet het faillissement van de politiek.

Verder schrijft hij: ‘Haar [de huidige generatie] belangrijkste taak zal eruit bestaan een nieuw bewustzijn en nieuwe institutionele modellen te ontwikkelen die beter aansluiten bij een situatie waarin ruimte en tijd zijn gemondialiseerd.’ (pag 174)

Daar zijn we dan ook volop mee bezig, jij, Frank, ik en vele anderen met ons. Vandaar dit opstel.

Het scenario dat in veel beschrijvingen van de huidige samenleving genoemd wordt, is een variant op het scenario ‘Tribal society’ dat Frank en ik in ‘Beleef 2030, 4 toekomstscenario’s voor de energiesector’ hebben geschreven.

Laag technologisch / instabiel

Wantrouwen en angst splijten de wereld. Anarchie en stammenstrijd leiden tot maatschappelijke ontwrichting en economische krimp. Het bruto binnenlands product neemt in Europa al jaren met zo’n 2% per jaar af, waardoor de productie over de hele linie is gehalveerd en er nauwelijks meer wordt geïnvesteerd in onderzoek en ontwikkeling. Europa is uiteen gevallen in tientallen regio’s. Die doen het in economisch opzicht overigens niet allemaal slecht. In sommige, meer stabiele regio’s is zelfs sprake van economische groei, doordat kapitaal en hoogwaardige arbeidskrachten daar naar toe vluchten. Over het geheel genomen is de situatie echter grimmig. In Europa en ook elders in de wereld is sprake van een balkanisering van de samenleving, waarin stammen tegen stammen en mensen tegen mensen strijden. Een continue oorlog van allen tegen allen. Tientallen culturele, etnische en religieuze systemen hebben de sociale cohesie en het goede leven in Europa verpulverd. Onbekommerd genieten en het gewoon jezelf kunnen zijn is niet meer mogelijk. Er is geen machtscentrum dat zorgt voor tegenwicht. Voor zover er al sprake is van een overheid is die erg zwak. Niemand voelt zich nog staatsburger. Er is geen staat meer en ook geen democratie.

Frank promoveert op de vraag hoe een (regionale) overheid duurzame ontwikkeling kan stimuleren. Hij komt uit op drie pijlers: gedrag, techniek en besluitvorming. Alleen techniek is niet voldoende. De overkill aan informatie die er al is, wordt nog groter door de gegevens die alle ‘dingen’ nu ook gaan uitzenden. Telefoons geven continu aan waar de drager zich bevindt. Slimme meters vertellen over onze dagelijkse routines, zoals wanneer we douchen. En er komen er meer: RFID-tags (radio-frequency identification) geheten. Objecten staan voortdurend in contact met het www. De communicatie tussen objecten en de informatie die zij verstrekken aan de digiprofs scheppen nieuwe machtscentra.

In die benadering ontstaat dus een nieuwe bovenklasse: de geïnformeerden: degenen die in staat zijn de overkill aan data te filteren en interpreteren. De massa wordt weer ‘analfabeet’, zoals in de Middeleeuwen het geval was, met dit verschil dat er een woud aan ‘non informatie’ (zoals reality-soaps en onderbuik blogs) als dikke mist om hen heen hangt en hen tevens van de tastbare werkelijkheid scheidt. (kinderen weten niet langer dat melk uit een koe komt, appels van een boom vallen, vrouwen bloeden en dat papa en mama seks hebben – of niet meer) . De massa heeft dus niet alleen geen toegang tot relevante informatie (verstopt als die is geraakt in grote pan brij), de massa heeft zelfs geen toegang meer tot de fysieke werkelijkheid.

Als je de wereld wilt behoeden voor het tribal scenario, zal meer nodig zijn dan techniek: veranderend gedrag (individueel) en gedragen besluitvorming (collectief). Bij dat laatste komt wat ons betreft Europa in beeld. Europa is een netwerk en een markt. Alle lidstaten zijn wederzijds afhankelijk en alleen al daarom wordt er niet gevochten. Een staat kan lid worden als er aan bepaalde basisvoorwaarden is voldaan (mensenrechten) Besluitvorming volgens consent, waarbij steeds de mensenrechten als hoogste wet tellen. Europa beperkt zich niet per sé tot het Europese continent, ook Marokko, Israël, Palestina et cetera kunnen toetreden, mits zoals gezegd de mensenrechten gewaarborgd zijn in die lidstaten. Europa is dus voor allen toegankelijk!

* Scenario 1 Vrijwillige Eenvoud

Laag technologisch / stabiel

Vrijwillige eenvoud is een levensstijl, die getypeerd kan worden met de woorden: rust, vertrouwen, geleidelijkheid, veiligheid, ethisch bewustzijn en duurzaamheid. De mensen in dit scenario hoeven geen derde auto, vijfde tv, of tweede boot. ‘Genoeg is genoeg,’ zeggen ze. Wat voor individuen geldt, gaat in breder verband ook op voor de samenleving als geheel. Solidariteit en soberheid zijn de hoekstenen van dit politiek-maatschappelijke model. De welvaart neemt niet spectaculair toe. Niettemin is er sprake van een gezonde, duurzame economische groei met gemiddeld 1% per jaar bij een stagnerende bevolkingsgroei, zodat de welvaart per hoofd iets toeneemt. Oorlogsdreiging is er niet, van terrorisme heeft de samenleving evenmin last. In een stabiele, redelijk comfortabele omgeving is gezondheid één van de belangrijkste maatschappelijke thema’s. De consument stelt hoge eisen aan comfort, persoonlijke service en duurzaamheid. Geïnvesteerd wordt er ook. Niet in bemande ruimtevluchten naar Mars, wél investeringen in duurzame technologie, zoals biomassa, windenergie en energiebesparing. Grote technologiesprongen worden echter niet gemaakt. Wat in 2030 kan, was in 2004 al ontwikkeld. Er wordt alleen bewuster gebruik van gemaakt. Het belangrijkste kenmerk van dit scenario is dat de eenvoud niet wordt opgelegd door omstandigheden. Het is gebaseerd op vrijwillige keuzes. Mensen nemen bewust genoegen met minder technologische en economische groei, omdat ze zich niet meer willen laten opjagen door de consumptiemaatschappij van méér, méér, méér. Er is een revival van religie en spirituele bewegingen. Hypermaterialisme delft het onderspit. Mensen trekken zich terug in de natuur en hekelen geweld.

Daarbinnen spelen de regio’s ofwel buurten een cruciale rol. Burgers richten hun eigen omgeving in op basis van mutual gains (dus door open gesprekken aan te gaan en rekening te houden met elkanders belangen). De grote schaal (Europa) en de kleine schaal bestaan parallel aan elkaar. Mensen die samen het plein waar ze aan wonen inrichten, elkaars kinderen opvangen, energie aan elkaar leveren en op allerlei andere wijzen met elkaar verbonden zijn, vormen community’s waarin voor ieder een plek is. Ze voelen dat ze ertoe doen en merken dat dingen kunnen veranderen. Vervreemding maakt plaats voor betrokkenheid. Controle maakt plaats voor vertrouwen.

Het oude dorpsgevoel heeft iets benauwends, is gesloten. Het nieuwe gemeenschapsgevoel daarentegen, is open. Mensen behoren tot diverse community’s, waarvan een aantal tot ver over de grenzen reikt. Via het www en de daarin actieve sociale netwerken, als linkedin, hyves et cetera, worden contacten onderhouden en nieuwe contacten gelegd. Informatie uitwisseling tussen community’s behoedt de kleine gemeenschappen voor tribaal isolement.

De diverse netwerken (fysiek, virtueel, overkoepelend en dichtbij) hebben dus knooppunten met elkaar en beïnvloeden elkaar. Ze blijven open.

Een ander scenario uit ‘Beleef 2030’ is Vrijwillige Eenvoud. De mens heeft de buik vol van meer, groter, sneller en kiest voor gezond, slim en met mate.

Dan kom je bij het besef dat we allemaal verliezen als we geen rekening houden met elkaar en met de natuur. Wanneer een klein deel der mensheid de aarde leegvreet en volstouwt met afval, terwijl anderen omkomen van honger, in watersnoden en door stormen en bosbranden, gaan we er allemaal aan. Hoge muren houden hongerigen niet buiten. Luchtfilters worden zinloos als er nergens meer schone lucht te vinden is.

Ook dit doen we op meerdere niveaus: zelf als individu en samen met de anderen in de diverse netwerken waar we deel van uitmaken. Ik zal mijn gedrag moeten veranderen om de wereld te veranderen. Minder vlees eten is een voor de hand liggend voorbeeld. Daarmee bestrijd ik armoede, klimaatverandering en blijf zelf gezonder.

De techniek (waaronder RFID) levert alleen dan een nuttige bijdrage als ze goed gebruikt wordt en niet een nieuwe machthebbende klasse creëert. Zoals het er nu naar uitziet worden technologieën vooral ingezet om mensen te controleren en uit te sluiten. Daarom is een gezond politiek systeem onontbeerlijk, daarbij horen alerte burgers, citizens, die zowel zichzelf als hun politici verantwoordelijk houden voor hun gedrag en besluiten. Een politiek klimaat dat een kritische houding stimuleert en waarin de afwijking en diversiteit gekoesterd worden. Toegankelijk en transparant.

‘De wereldvrede kan niet gewaarborgd zijn zonder creatieve inspanningen die opgewassen zijn tegen de gevaren die haar bedreigen’

Nog maar enkele decennia geleden stonden Frankrijk en Duitsland even dreigend tegenover elkaar als nu het Westen en de Arabische wereld. Geestelijk vader van Verenigd Europa, Robert Schuman werd van Fransman Duitser en later weer Fransman. Simpelweg doordat de grens een stukje opschoof. Hij droeg beide werelden in zich. Barack Obama heeft een soortgelijke persoonlijke geschiedenis. Hij draagt Amerika, Afrika, het Christendom en de Islam in zich. Beiden weten, uit ervaring, hoe verrijkend verschil kan werken. Als je insluit en niet buiten sluit. Dat is de weg die Europa in 1950 koos en stap voor stap doorzet. De Verenigde Staten kiezen nu een soortgelijk pad.

Caïro, 4 juni 2009:

Barack Obama roept op tot een dialoog tussen Islam en het Westen. Hij citeert uit de Koran, benoemt verschillen en roept op om ‘naar elkaar te luisteren, van elkaar te leren, elkaar te respecteren en overeenstemming te vinden’. Obama spreekt zich uit voor een vrij Palestina en voor handel en diplomatieke banden tussen Israël en de Arabische staten. Vrijhandel als de basis voor vrede.

De Europese Unie is op dezelfde gedachte gestoeld: vrijhandel als basis voor vrede. Geestelijk vader van de EU, Robert Schuman, besefte al tijdens WOII hoe krankzinnig het is als mensen elkaar de kop in slaan. Wanneer je wederzijds afhankelijk bent, doe je dat niet. Een verenigd Europa begon met de EGKS, Europese Gemeenschap voor Kolen en Staal, tussen Frankrijk en Duitsland.

Verklaring van Robert Schuman op 9 mei 1950: ‘De solidariteit van de aldus tot stand gekomen productie [dit is de EGKS, nonfiXe], zal tonen dat een oorlog tussen Frankrijk en Duitsland niet alleen ondenkbaar, maar ook materieel onmogelijk wordt. De oprichting van deze machtige productie-eenheid, die zal openstaan voor alle landen die zich daarbij willen aansluiten, en die zal uitlopen op het voorzien van de basiselementen van de industriële productie volgens dezelfde voorwaarden aan al de bijeengebrachte landen, zal de werkelijke grondslag voor hun economische eenwording vormen.’

De twee gezworen vijanden, Frankrijk en Duitsland, die al twee wereldoorlogen hadden uitgevochten, werden handelspartner. Langzaam groeide het handelsverdrag uit tot een Europese Unie en verder, tot een Europese Economische Ruimte (EER) en een Common European Economic Space, zoals Schuman en zijn geestverwant Monnet beoogd hadden.

‘Deze productie zal aan de hele wereld worden aangeboden, zonder onderscheid of uitsluiting, om bij te dragen aan de verhoging van de levensstandaard en de vooruitgang van vreedzame verwezenlijkingen. (Europa zal met de toegenomen middelen de realisatie van een van zijn essentiële taken kunnen voortzetten: de ontwikkeling van het Afrikaanse continent. *)’ staat in dezelfde verklaring. De toevoeging waarmee de ontwikkeling van het Afrikaanse continent een belangrijke taak van Europa wordt genoemd is van Jean Monnet.

In oorsprong stond de EU open voor alle landen die willen deelnemen, mits er aan basisvoorwaarden (zoals een democratisch bestel en naleving van de mensenrechten) werd voldaan. Waarom? Voor vrede!

Barack Obama volgt hetzelfde principe: vrede door vrijhandel. De Europese Unie ook nog steeds. Daarom moeten landen zoals Turkije juist wel lid worden. Daarom werkt Sarkozy (en met hem Angela Merkel) aan een Union de Mediterranée. Common spaces die zich langzaam maar zeker uitbreiden als inkt op vloeipapier, via Marokko en Syrië, naar Israël en Palestina, verder op weg naar wereldvrede.

Een dag nadat hij de Koran citeerde in Caïro, staat  de Amerikaanse president weer op de voorpagina van diverse kranten. Obama in Buchenwald: ‘Ahmadinejad zou dit moeten zien’, zegt de president van de Verenigde Staten over zijn Iranese collega. Op de foto staat Obama alleen, met een witte roos bij de gedenkplaat die dezelfde temperatuur heeft als het menselijk lichaam. Het signaal is duidelijk: De VS sluit de Arabische landen én Israël in, op een natuurlijke wijze, die doet denken aan de manier waarop Mahatma Gandhi vrede nastreefde.
